Chateau Lafleur 2021

Pomerol

JAMES SUCKLING: "Woooow! This really rolls off the palate and goes on and on, Full-bodied and so long. Sweet and sour. Cherries, currants. Orange peel. Thought-provokingly energetic. Defines youthful sophistication."

WEINWISSER: "52 % Bouchet (= Cabernet Franc), 48 % Merlot.

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "The Guinaudeau family's mantra is to "never submit to the vintage," and in 2021 that meant 10 sleepless nights of frost protection and a growing season that required quick reactions to perform the necessary treatments without neglecting the other important viticultural tasks of the year. The reward is the profound 2021 Lafleur, a brilliant blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot that wafts from the glass with aromas of wild berries, violets, rose petals, vine smoke and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's deep and penetrating, with superb concentration and beautifully refined structuring tannins, concluding with a long, resonant finish. A monument in the making, I wouldn't be surprised to see it transcend my bracketed score when revisited in bottle."

DECANTER: "An exceptional success in 2021 and surely one of the best wines of the vintage. An expressive nose, which opens more after 10 minutes in the glass, gives lovely salty soy aromas, ripe and concentrated blackcurrant, wet stone, smoked earth notes with perfume lingering in the background - lilac, violets and irises as well as some sweet chocolate - so much going on. Clearly powerful, ripe and concentrated - intensity on a grand scale - really giving a lot of flavour but tightly packaged in terms of layers and tannins which are finely grained and settle in the mouth giving the frame. The flavours expand slowly and then linger so long on the finish. Direct, linear, determined and persistent with clear definition of each element. Purity, clarity and balance - I just love the intention here - it knows where it's going with a quiet confidence and gives a warm blood and iodine note at the end bringing you right back to Lafleur. Sensational."

THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Spearmint, tobacco leaf, flowers, cherries, wet earth, smoke, truffle and leafy herbs shine in the nose. This is an elegant, refined, pensive, vivacious, reserved Lafleur that remains focused on its purity of the fruit and silkiness in the tannins. Balanced, harmonious, vibrant, long and seductive, the wine offers a purity to its concentrated, red fruits that is made even better with its refreshing touch of mint and earthy nuances that come in nicely in the lengthy finish. Clearly, this is the Pomerol of the vintage as well as a leading contender for the wine of the year! Produced from a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc and 48% Merlot, 13.5% ABV, harvesting took place September 17-24 for the Merlot and October 2 for the Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2025-2060."

JEB DUNNUCK: "I wouldn't be surprised to see the 2021 Château Lafleur be the wine of the vintage. Based on 52% Bouchet (Cabernet Franc) and 48% Merlot, it's hard to believe this is a 2021 when tasting it, and it has more density, depth, and class than just about every other wine out there. Gorgeous black raspberries, framboise, spring flowers, scorched earth, and graphite define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and has incredible tannins and a salty, mineral-drenched vibe on the finish that's something to behold. Wines in 2021 that stand up to what was achieved in 2016, 2018, and 2019 are few and far between, but this might be one of them. This is as singular as they come and shows the absolute best of the vintage. Bravo."

FALSTAFF: "Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Feine Kräuterwürze, tabakig unterlegte Brombeernuancen, schwarzer Pfeffer, zart nach Orangenzesten. Komplex, aber mit mittlerem Gewicht, feine Herzkirschen, finessenreicher Säurebogen, mineralisch und elegant, harmonisch, bleibt gut haften, würziger Anklang im Abgang, zarte Süße im Nachhall, verfügt über gutes Entwicklungspotenzial."

LISA PERROTTI-BROWN: "The 2021 Lafleur is a blend of 52% Cabernet Franc, harvested on 2 October, and 48% Merlot, harvested on 17 and 24 September. It prances out of the glass with carefree, showy scents of redcurrant preserves, black raspberries, and rose oil, followed by suggestions of chocolate covered cherries, crushed rocks, graphite, and tree bark. Medium-bodied, the palate has firm, very ripe, very finely grained tannins with amazing tension supporting the intense red and black fruit layers, finishing long and achingly fragrant."

JANCIS ROBINSON: "52% Bouchet (Cabernet Franc), 48% Merlot. Cask sample. Exceptional density for the vintage. As usual restrained, although there is a floral nuance. Fruit-filled palate but with freshness and balance as well. Big tannic frame with imposing but polished tannins. Clearly the potential to age. (JL)"
