THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Cherries, flowers, crushed rocks, and stones, licorice, black plums, and cocoa display in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is loaded with sweet, ripe, black raspberries, cherries, and chocolate, with a refreshing salty-mint accent on the backend. The wine is a blend of 80% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Franc. 14.1% ABV, 3.5 pH. The wine is produced from some of the oldest vines in the appellation, with the oldest vines dating back to 1870! Drink from 2026-2035."

THE WINE ADVOCATE: "The 2023 Joanin Bécot is a solid performance this year, evoking aromas of violet, flowers, dark wild berries and iris, followed by a precise, tense, juicy and savory palate that is fleshier than the 2022 vintage, with velvety tannins and a tense, ethereal and calcareous finish. It's a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc."

DECANTER: "Chalky, ripe black fruit on the nose with blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry and plum on the palate. Quite tense - there’s some linearity to this, direct and quite lean with a salty, liquorice and dark chocolate core. More juicy on the second taste with red fruits - cranberry and red cherry - alongside powdery tannins that fill the mouth. Charming though still straight and a touch lean with licks of wet stone and menthol freshness on the finish. 3.5pH."

JEB DUNNUCK: "The 2023 Château Joanin Bécot comes from limestone soils in the Castillon region and is mostly Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc. It’s deep ruby/plum-hued and displays a gorgeous limestone character in its black raspberry and redcurrant-like fruits as well as spring flowers, spice, and chalky minerality. Brought up 65% new oak and hitting 14.7% alcohol, it's beautifully ripe, has medium-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. This is a hidden little gem of a wine."
