Chateau Cos d´Estournel - Saint Estephe

97-100 THE WINEADVOCATE: "The 2018 Cos d´Estournel is composed of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc and has 14.59% alcohol. Aging in 50% new barriques, it has a deep purple-black color and drifts effortlessly, gracefully, seductively out of the glass with slowly unfurling notions of blackcurrant cordial, wild blueberries, chocolate-covered cherries and plum pudding with touches of violets, licorice, wild roses and yeast extract plus a waft of loose tobacco. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house with a solid frame of super firm, super ripe tannins and seamless freshness to back up the vibrant, crunchy, oh-so-muscular fruit, finishing long with loads of mineral layers. Amazing structure will keep this beauty for at least half a century and probably a full one!"

98 FALSTAFF: "Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Frische schwarze Herzkirschen, feine Edelholzwürze, ein Hauch von Nougat, mit schwarzen Waldbeeren unterlegt. Saftig, elegant, reife Kirschen, finessenreich, präsente, feinwürzige Tannine, zarter Nougat, ein sehr beeindruckender frischer Stil, zart nach Feigen im Nachhall."

18,5 WEINWISSER: "74?% Cabernet Sauvignon 23?% Merlot, 2?% Cabernet Franc, 1?% Petit Verdot, 14,5?% vol, 2/3 Grand Vin, 29,5?hl/ha.

95-97 WINE ENTHUSIAST: "Big, rich and smoky in nature, with powerful fruits and dense tannins, this is a wine that is straining at the limits but still within balance. Rich, smoky flavors shine along with the black plum fruit and bright acidity. It will age for many years."

97 DECANTER: "This has some austerity on the attack, then announces its arrival in the inimitable way that Cos is able to do: with a slow build up of exotic spices, liquorice root, cedar and cassis. It stretches out through the palate and you keep waiting for the tannins to punch through like they did in 2010, but it doesn´t happen, even though this is a big wine with high alcohol and an IPT of 80. There´s a great menthol freshness on the finish, helped no doubt by a fresh 3.65pH. It has the luxurious signature of Cos, the glamorous touch that you look for in this wine - like at Mouton and at Angelus - that is part of their DNA, but it´s also married to elegance and a touch of slate minerality. This is a wine that you would be thrilled to own. 12mm of rain on 12 September and 20mm in mid-August were just enough to stop any blockages in ripening, although the 30hl/ha yield is low due to a touch of mildew and some concentration in September. This compares to a more generous 45hl/ha in 2016. 65% of production went into the grand vin. 1% Petit Verdot makes up the blend, and the wine is aged in 50% new oak (a little lower than the usual 60%). A candidate to upscore when in bottle."

98-99 JAMES SUCKLING: "What strikes you is how aromatic this already is at this stage. Complex and decadent, showing lots of dark berries, smoked meat, wet earth, and dried leaves. Decadent. Full-bodied with very ripe and polished, velvety tannins. Great finish."

97-100 ANTONIO GALLONI: "A regal, soaring Saint-Estèphe, the 2018 Cos d´Estournel is also clearly one of the wines of the vintage. On the palate, the 2018 is dark and sumptuous, with striking aromatic presence and silky tannins that wrap around a rich core of exotic fruit. Black cherry, savory herbs, leather, spice and menthol build in the glass in a wine that is both aromatically intense and richly textured. The 2018 has been nothing short of breathtaking on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. Don´t miss it."

98-100 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "With its telltale Asian spice perfume, the color is impossible to see through. Full-bodied, dense, rich and fleshy, the wine coats your palate with a display of red and black fruits, spice, smoke, earth and licorice. The tannins are polished. The fruit, even with this much weight and flesh, remains fresh and balanced. The finish keeps on going long after the wine has left its glass and gone to where it was intended to go. I timed it, and it surpassed the 60 second mark! This is positively stunning and if you’re a lover of COS, as this is one of the best vintages produced in the long history of the estate, this belongs in your cellar. The wine was made from blending 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 14.6% alcohol with a pH of 3.7. The harvest took place September 19 to October 6. The Grand Vin was made from only 65% of the harvest."

97-99+ JEB DUNNUCK: "Deeply colored, the 2018 Cos D´Estournel shows the incredible purity and elegance that this estate delivers these days as well as fabulous crème de cassis, graphite, white flowers, and spicy oak aromas and flavors. Made from 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, aging in 50% new barrels, it builds with time in the glass and has a full-bodied, decadent yet also seamless mouthfeel, layers of tannins, and a great finish. This is as classy as it gets and certainly a candidate for the King of Saint-Estèphe in 2018. Given its purity and balance as well as depth of fruit, it should offer loads of pleasure in its youth yet also evolve nicely for 3-4 decades. This estate has been on an incredible roll over the past 7-8 years and this is another killer wine. For those interested in the technical data, this wine hit 14.59% alcohol, with a pH of 3.69, total acids of 3.3, and a whopping IPT of 80."

92-94 THE WINEADVOCATE: "A blend of 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Sémillon aging in 7% new barriques (13.88% alcohol), the Cos d´Estournel 2018 Blanc is a little closed to begin, opening out to energetic white peach, pink grapefruit and green guava notes plus touches of honeyed toast, orange blossom and coriander seed. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with exotic fruit and stone fruit layers, marked by a seriously refreshing line and finishes long and honey laced."

94 DECANTER: "The blanc has higher levels of Sémillon this vintage, which may have helped produce both the texture and the depth that are on display here. It feels like a serious white wine, with a grip and minerality that´s in no rush to show itself, but is clearly there by the way that it snugly moves through the palate. It has a pretty strong slate texture on the finish and overall this is a delicious white, equal to the 2016 for sure although not quite up to the 2017 - but very close behind. Delicious, mouthwatering, and grown up. 3.07pH."

97-98 JAMES SUCKLING: "This is very powerful and tangy with driven acidity and freshness. Full-bodied yet layered and bright. Tight center palate. One of my favorite whites of the vintage."

91-94 ANTONIO GALLONI: "The 2018 Cos d´Estournel Blanc reflects a move to give the Blanc more Sémillon than in the past. Creamy and ample in feel, the 2018 offers superb richness and class from start to finish. Sémillon adds mid-palate texture and slightly richer shades to the fruit, but the wine remains Sauvignon Blanc-driven in its energy and brightness. Lemon confit, white flowers, mint and crushed rocks lead into the finely sculpted finish. The blend is 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Sémillon."

94 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "Youthful and crisp, with little effort, the spark of honeysuckle, orange, grapefruit, vanilla and lemon hits the perfume. On the palate this wine is drenched in brightness, yellow citrus and a hint of honey, providing a fresh, refreshing, juicy experience."

93-95 JEB DUNNUCK: "The 2018 Cos D´Estournel Blanc includes slightly more Sémillon and is 67% Sauvignon and 33% Sémillon brought up all in barrel, with just 7% being new. Richer notes of crushed citrus, tart peach, white flowers, and salty minerality all emerge from this beauty. It´s medium to full-bodied, clean, nicely concentrated, and has a great finish. It´s one of the richer whites in the vintage, yet it stays vibrant and racy, with beautiful acidity. Bravo."

93-95 THE WINEADVOCATE: "The 2018 Les Pagodes de Cos (14.51% alcohol) is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc, aging in 20% new barriques. Deep purple-black in color, it practically explodes from the glass with rambunctious notions of baked black cherries, plum preserves and crème de cassis with hints of cigar box, fungi, tilled soil and woodsmoke plus a touch of crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves with a beautiful earthy undercurrent and a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins, finishing with fantastic length. A very serious second wine! Should age incredibly."

17,5 WEINWISSER: "54?% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37?% Merlot, 6?% Petit Verdot, 3?% Cabernet Franc, Produktion: 1/3 Zweitwein. Granat mit aufhellendem Rand. Intensives Bouquet nach frischem Schattenmorellensaft und Waldhimbeeren, dahinter verspielte Veilchen und Preiselbeergelee. Am kräftigen Gaumen mit abgerundeten Tanninen und guter Frische unterlegt. Im gebündelten Finale stützende Mineralik und schwarzbeerige Konturen, sehr präzise vinifiziert."

92 DECANTER: "Full of liquorice and dark chocolate, the nose is immediately seductive. This is a second wine that´s full of fleshy, sexy, bright fruit and real elegance. It´s a lovely wine, if clearly marked by the generosity of the vintage. The 30hl/ha yield was affected by a mix of mildew and some concentration in September. To control extractions, they macerated at a lower temperature of 27-28°C. As with the grand vin, this is aged in 20% new oak, down a little on the usual amount. 3% Petit Verdot completes the blend."

94-95 JAMES SUCKLING: "This is so beautiful with very fresh and ripe fruit at the same time. Medium-to full-bodied. Rich and layered. The accessibility and forwardness is so enticing in this second wine. Best Pagodes ever?"

91-94 ANTONIO GALLONI: "The 2018 Les Pagodes de Cos is fabulous. Rich, dark and explosive, Pagodes captures all of the natural intensity of the vintage. Black cherry, leather, cedar, scorched earth and grilled herbs all blossom in a dark, somber wine loaded with class. Huge, ripe fruit and equally large-scaled tannins result in a Pagodes that, if anything, may be too serious for a second wine. In 2018, Pagodes is equal to or better than the top wines from many other châteaux. The blend is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc."

93-95 THE WINE CELLAR INSIDER: "With its powerful display of ripe, dark fruits, the wine is packed with sweet, lush, juicy blackberry, espresso, oak and spice-box notes. The texture, complexity and length is there as well. This is one of the top second wines in Bordeaux today. Drink this young while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop."

92-94 JEB DUNNUCK: "The true second wine of the estate, the 2018 Pagodes De Cos is sensational stuff and clocks in at 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that saw slightly more new oak than usual. Blueberries, cassis, crushed violets, and classy oak all flow to a medium to full-bodied effort that has incredible class and elegance as well as texture. Fresh, clean, and beautifully balanced, it’s a terrific wine in its own right."
